There are only a small number of Arrows being sailed in South Australia at the moment, but the standard is still remarkably high. The final two heats of the State Championship again proved this. With Brett Pearsons unable to sail in most heats, it was a two-boat battle between Steve Rogers and Craig Pearsons throughout the series, which was sailed over four weekends from October to March.
Steve Rogers had a remarkable season. He won the first two heats at Victor Harbor, then inexplicably finished last in the next two at Adelaide. However, he recovered form at Christies Beach in January to take a second and then to snatch a classic “come from nowhere” victory from a more deserving Paul Fisher. “Mr Consistency” Craig had scored a 1st, four 2nds and a 3rd place after the heats at Christies Beach.
Normanville turned on a rare perfect south-westerly for the final two heats. Steve and Craig were neckand-neck in both races, and on the very short Normanville course, it was compelling viewing. Each won a heat, and with the rules allowing two heats of the 8 to be dropped, Steve took out the Championship.
Paul Fisher and David Overall were also close competitors. David distinguished himself in winning a heat at Adelaide, but overall, Paul was a little faster and claimed 3rd place.
